How to transplant garden clematis
Content:
These beautiful and delicate plants have one amazing property - they go well with any culture. Yes, clematis (or clematis) is an excellent companion for both roses and annuals, for any herbs and conifers. Despite its fragility and sensitivity, in the wild, clematis prefers the northern part of the temperate climatic zones, its favorite habitats are forest, coast and river valley, rock and cliff, steppe and steppe meadow, hillside, shrub thickets. A very common measure for successful plant growth is clematis transplantation.
Cultivation of clematis was started in the 16th century on the territory of western Europe. Clematis appeared on Russian soil at the beginning of the 19th century. And gradually, many species and varieties for garden plots were bred from the greenhouse plant. Clematis is not resistant to cold weather, so it needs protection from winter frosts.
They cover the walls, bare trunks with bush climbing clematis, plant trees for gazebos, trellises, and pergolas. With the help of creeping species, they close low walls, decorate balconies. And the classic straight varieties of shrubs are used in landscape design both in a group of plants and in a single planting.
Any gardener who has undertaken planting or transplanting clematis should have an idea about the technique of transplanting them in the autumn and spring periods and about the rules for caring for them during the season.
Timely watering, feeding, lighting, tying and pruning - all of these steps in clematis care - will help decorate your garden with these wonderful plants every year.
Why do I need to transplant clematis to another place
For clematis, which can grow safely in one place for up to 25 years, it is still important to create conditions close to ideal. The culture is quite demanding on the composition of the soil. It should be nutritious, "well-fed", moisturized in a timely manner, but without excess moisture. And the landing site should be both sunny and shaded at the base of the shrub. The requirement for coolness at the base is due to the susceptibility of the root system to excessive heat.
Let's talk about main reasonswhy you need a clematis transplant:
- In the place where clematis grows, the soil may be depleted in several years, or the trees overgrown nearby block the sunlight for clematis. Or maybe the owners have built a new building nearby, from the roof of which rainwater is dripping onto the clematis bushes. All these are approximate reasons for changing the usual, previously created conditions for the growth of clematis. In these cases, you need to transplant clematis to another place.
- Over time, due to the maturation of the bush, it will be necessary to change the place. In parallel with the transplant, the bush can be divided and divided. It should be remembered that you cannot plant a bush that is blooming. True, when choosing between saving a bush and flowering, it is recommended to remove flowers and buds and start transplanting.
Transplant of an adult clematis - at what time
You should take a responsible approach to transplanting and choose the right time. Basically, all clematis in various regions of Russia are transplanted early in the fall, so that the roots of the plant can harden before the winter cold. Be sure to take into account the climate of the place and the condition of the bush.
- For young seedlings with closed root systems, the best time to transplant is early spring and autumn. In extreme cases, summer time is fine.
- If the roots of the seedlings are open, then it is better to plant them in open soil in early autumn (for cold regions where winter is early, do this on August days).
- In emergency cases, when the conversation is about how to save the bush, it is transplanted at any time. Of course, the plant is given a lot of time to nurture.
It is difficult to say which is better - an autumn or spring transplant of clematis. It is important here to pay attention to the place where the crop is grown. Due to the fact that clematis has an early growing season, they try to plant them as soon as the soil thaws.
Southern regions with their rapid onset of spring are pushing gardeners not to delay planting. Otherwise, you may be late. For the southern regions, the best time to plant clematis is September. Since winter comes late here, the seedling will easily take root and survive the winter cold.
Not so - with Siberian clematis. There are early winters here, so it is better to plant clematis in the spring. During the summer, the seedlings will harden and be ready for winter. It is possible for Siberia to plant in the autumn, but it should be early autumn, and better - the end of summer.
Now about how clematis is planted in Moscow areas... For the Moscow region, the "golden mean" is suitable. Recommended for both spring and autumn days. Here, the main reference point is the weather conditions and the condition of the seedlings (open or closed root systems). Of course, do not delay the autumn planting. It is best to plant earlier so that clematis has time to harden and thereby prepare for winter.
Breeding clematis
Mature clematis bushes are transplanted, combining this process with reproduction. The shrub is freed from the soil and divided with a knife or hatchet into several parts, each of which must have several shoots. Further, they are quickly planted, preventing the root system from drying out. They do it in the spring or autumn. Since in the summer, the culture has an active growing season, and the plant can get sick.
Cuttings clematis are produced during the budding period (May-June). Let's talk about the successive stages of cuttings.
- A cutting should be taken from a mature shoot, which has one internode and two full-fledged buds. Above these kidneys - 10-20 mm, under the internode - 30-40 mm.
- Rooting is carried out in light soil or with the help of neutral components (perlite, vermiculite), which is placed in pot containers or in open ground.
- Next, the seedling is transferred to the shaded part of the site and irrigated with regularity, covering it with a mini-greenhouse.
- After several shoots appear, the greenhouse should be opened slightly, starting to gradually temper the cutting.
- After moistening the soil, it is important to mulch. When the height of the plant reaches 15 centimeters, the top is pinched off, so that the shoot will not stretch, but become lush and thick.
- The next year, young plants are planted in a new place, that is, where they will constantly be. The first winter for young clematis is a real test. Therefore, they must be insulated (sprinkle with soil or peat mixture, cover with spruce branches).
Clematis is also propagated with the help layering... In this case, it is enough to dig in last year's strong shoots, press down with slingshots and moisten them regularly.
In the fall, internodes will give new shoots with roots. It is not necessary to fill up the tips of the layers (up to 18-20 cm). It is better to pinch them as soon as new shoots appear. It is best to plant young sprouts in the spring, trying not to damage the root system.
How to choose a place for planting garden clematis
Do you want your clematis to delight as long as possible with its amazing flowers, and so that there is no reason to transplant it? Then take care of this when planting - plant it correctly!
To begin with, you should choose the right places for planting plants, taking into account all the exactingness of the culture. Namely:
- the soil should be nutritious, penetrating, moderately moist;
- stagnant waterlogging is unacceptable for the root system of clematis. So take care of the drainage. It is good if the landing site is at least a little elevated;
- without sunlight - no way, take care of a sunny location. The shade will not allow the plant to bloom, and can also contribute to fungal diseases;
- shading the near-stem circle for the plant is necessary so that moisture does not evaporate quickly, and the scorching sun does not damage the roots. This can be achieved with the help of low-growing plants - marigolds, calendula;
- Clematis does not have climbing vines and whiskers, like grapes, so the plant clings to supports with the help of leaf petioles. A light but strong lattice, mesh is suitable as supports;
- clematis does not tolerate wind. Therefore, the landing site must be calm or sheltered from the wind;
- when planting near the walls of buildings, one should take into account the fact that the root system of clematis can be severely affected by rain or other water pouring from the roofs;
If the basic requirements for planting clematis are met, then the plant will easily take root. True, for the first three years, its appearance will be poor. But gradually clematis will get stronger, and by the age of three or four it will be filled with strength and begin to fascinate with its beauty.
Clematis transplant - how to do it right
To place one seedling, a pit measuring 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 m is required.There should be at least one meter between plantings. To enrich the soil, it is necessary to add humus, sod, peat and sand in equal proportions. The mixture should not contain roots, weeds, etc. Fertilizers should be applied to the planting pit: wood ash (300 grams), any complex mineral fertilizer (up to 150 grams). This is enough for the first years of plant development.
In the case of high soil density and poor permeability when planting clematis, good drainage is indispensable. The depth of the pit is increased by about 35 cm and broken brick, gravel or sand is laid on the bottom. A layer of previously prepared fertile soil is used for drainage. Before planting, allow time for the soil to settle.
Now let's note the main stages planting clematis:
- choose a place, prepare pits and nutrient soil;
- shorten the lash of the seedlings, cut off the extra long roots;
- making a landing, a mound is made in the center. And, evenly distributing the roots of the plant, place it at a level of up to 20 cm from the root collar to the growth buds. Don't forget the support pegs for the garter;
- cover the planting hole with nutritious soil. Water the near-trunk circle abundantly;
- the trunk circle is mulched using a peat layer. Such mulch will protect both from overheating and drying out, and from the effects of the first frost and cold night temperatures;
- for the first season, clematis does not have to be fed with anything, since the applied fertilizers and nutrient reserves of the soil will be quite enough;
- to strengthen the perennial, during the first season, you should remove the buds, tie up thin and fragile shoots and carefully guide them to the supports.
On the preparation of clematis for the winter period
Of course, it is important to plant clematis in the fall. But that's not all: it is equally important to regularly water, weed, mulch and cover.
Warming should be carried out on time: not too late and not too early! If meteorologists promise a cold winter, then it is worth taking care of the protection of clematis in advance.
In the fall, as preparation, the leaves that remain are removed, and the branches are folded into a ring. At the end of summer or at the beginning of autumn, fertilizing with potash and phosphorus fertilizers is carried out. Nitrogen is not used. In addition, those bushes that have just been transplanted are not fed.
If it's autumn with rains, then watering can be reduced to a minimum or completely canceled.
For prophylaxis against fungi of various kinds, preparations with copper are used. The area of the trunk circle is covered with peat, rotted old humus or compost.
The branches located on the supports should be covered with a non-woven material (lutrasil, spunbond).
It is best that the spruce branches cover the shoots that do not cling to the supporting structures. But, if the winter is harsh, cover the plant with a box (plastic or wooden). In this case, the plant will be protected from high humidity, which means it will not heat up. Cover with materials with waterproof properties, sprinkle with dry soil on top.
In the spring, the plant is freed from all this gradually, the main thing is not to rush to return cold weather.
Any gardener who has undertaken planting or transplanting clematis should have an idea about the technique of transplanting them in the autumn and spring periods and about the rules for caring for them during the season.
Timely watering, feeding, lighting, tying and pruning - all these steps of clematis care will help decorate your garden with these wonderful plants every year.
