Among the people, irises are often called cockerels. Our gardeners and amateur gardeners are most attracted by the unusual beauty and really quick adaptation characteristic of these flowers. Even a novice gardener can grow iris. Due to the fact that they do not require special care and do not cause any trouble at all. But still, everyone is obliged to know the basics of this business!
How to choose the right planting site and prepare the soil
Velvety irises prefer sunny places without open drafts. Therefore, it is important to choose the right place where everything will be open and located on a hill. Of course, everything can be arranged on the most ordinary sandy soil, but if necessary, it will be possible to prepare the soil and apply fertilizers, soils to create better conditions. It is unacceptable to use fertilizers that contain manure for velvety irises. Before planting, the soil must be well dug up and treated with insecticidal preparations.
When and how to plant iris?
Velvety irises can be planted in summer, spring, autumn. Spring planting occurs in early April. When planting, irises should not be buried; when deepening, there is a risk of rotting. If the roots are tied, then these cockerels can only be planted in the fall. A place for planting irises must be prepared in advance, add lime, compost to the soil, and bone meal can also be used. Before planting, it is necessary to inspect the plant, remove all affected and rotten areas. The root system must be treated with special agents such as zercon or eco-gel. Then pour sand into a shallow planting hole, spread the roots of the plant and sprinkle it with earth. To retain moisture and prevent drying out, the soil should be well mulched. In summer, velvety iris can be planted both before bud ovary and after flowering. The root system of the plant should have good rings, while there is no need to extract the entire root system, you can simply cut off the strongest links from the root
In autumn, irises can be planted until the end of September. Care measures include regular watering, loosening, feeding, watering if necessary, mulching. Mulching is necessary so that the plant does not dry out, and in winter, mulch will become a covering material. As soon as the males have faded, the stalks must be cut off. Before the onset of cold weather, the root system of velvety irises must be sprinkled with soil 5-6 cm and mulched.
How to deal with pests
If affected by rot, the flower should be removed, and the bed should be treated with a two percent solution of foundation. In case of heterosporosis, the affected leaves and areas should be removed and burned, the flowers should be treated with copper sulfate. In case of damage by pests, we use a 10% solution of karbofos for processing. Irises will decorate any garden, they have a variety of shades and are not quite whimsical to care for.
