Pear Prominent (Lumpy)
Content:
Today there are a huge number of fruit trees and because of this, novice farmers face a difficult task with a choice. Pear Prominent or Bumpy is considered a rather unpretentious culture, which gardeners have already managed to fall in love with, and it has long justified all expectations. In this article, we will analyze all the features of the care and cultivation of the Vidnaya pear variety, as well as all its advantages and disadvantages.
Pear Prominent: variety description and characteristics
The Vidnaya pear variety appeared thanks to the works of domestic scientists-breeders Yu.A. Petrov and N.V. Efimov, and for quite some time, back in 1958. The Vidnaya (Bumpy) pear appeared due to the crossing of the classic southern pear and the transitional hybrid variety VI-53-67. This subspecies was able to meet all expectations and even more, so in 1972 it was put on a par with elite varieties. The culture is distinguished by a high level of frost resistance in Russia, due to which this variety is often grown in the central region of our country. The subspecies received particular popularity and prevalence in the Moscow region and neighboring areas.
The Vidnaya pear variety is considered a self-fertile crop that brings a fairly bountiful harvest, albeit a late one. The fruiting period for this culture begins three to four years after planting and lasts from the last summer month to the second half of September. From each such tree, you can get a ripe harvest of about 50 kilograms.
The lumpy pear tree can grow up to about six meters. At a young age, the culture has a dense and spreading crown, with age, which becomes pyramidal in shape and an average level of splendor. The trunk of the plant is quite thick and strong, it can have a circumference of 25 centimeters. The stems are quite massive and covered with ringlets, on which fruit formations are formed. The foliage is medium in size and has a shiny, smooth surface with serrated edges. The leaves are ovoid and elongated. The petioles of the plant are short, slightly curved and have a pale brown tint.
The pear variety Vidnaya (Bumpy) has large and medium-sized fruits. The weight of one such fruit during ripening can reach about 160 grams, although there are also such specimens that weigh 200 grams. The fruits are endowed with a symmetrical and elongated shape, as well as a ribbed surface. That is why the subspecies received another name - Pear Bumpy. When the fruits are just formed, they have a green hue of the peel, and when full ripening approaches, the peel becomes yellow in color. In some areas, a slight orange tint may form on the fruit and this is quite normal. The inner part of the fruit has a dense and juicy structure, has a milky hue. On the palate, the fruits are distinguished by their richness and nutmeg aftertaste with a slight sourness. The fruits of this subspecies can be consumed unprocessed, as well as dried, added to various baked goods, used for making marmalade, preserves, jam and compotes.
Advantages and disadvantages
The Vidnaya pear variety has a number of positive qualities that distinguish it from other subspecies. In they:
- Early maturity, the first ripe crop can be obtained after three to four years of life.
- High level of cold resistance.
- High level of immunity to diseases such as powdery mildew and scab.
- Constant and abundant harvest.
- The buds are not affected during frost, as this variety has a late flowering period.
- Absolutely not a capricious culture that can grow even on poor soil.
- Self-fertile variety.
- High level of taste and market characteristics.
Due to the fact that the Vidnaya or Bugristaya pear has so many positive qualities, the subspecies is often grown not only in private gardening, but also on an industrial scale. This variety is also often used for breeding purposes.
There are practically no disadvantages of the Vidnaya pear variety. Fresh fruits can have a shelf life of up to a maximum of 8-9 days. Pears ripen unevenly, due to which it will be better to harvest in several stages. And due to the fact that the tree is distinguished by its spreading and height, it is quite difficult to get to some of the fruits.
Although the variety is considered self-fertile, it is worth planting a pollinating tree near this tree, such as Autumn Yakovleva, or Rogneda. Due to this, your variety will give you even larger fruits and a bountiful harvest.
Pear Prominent (Bumpy): planting varieties
In order for you to grow a strong and healthy fruit tree that brings a good harvest on a regular basis, you must comply with all agrotechnical standards.
If you are going to grow the Vidnaya pear variety in the southern regions of our country, then you should plant it in the last days of September or very early October. During the winter period, the young plant will be able to adapt and take root. And with the onset of spring, the culture will begin to grow. When grown in an area with a cold and rather unstable climate, this subspecies should be planted in an open space in the spring period of the year, after about April 15, since by this time the earth has already warmed up and is saturated with melt water. It is only worth noting that the planting should be done quickly, until the moment when the buds of the seedling begin to swell.
For full-fledged growth and development for this tree, it is worth choosing a growing area that is sufficiently illuminated and spacious. When a young plant is planted in the shade, its fruits will be tasteless when ripe, and the yield level as a whole will be several times less than possible. The best option would be if there was a fence on the north side of the tree, protecting the pear from cold and through winds. This variety has a categorically negative attitude towards stagnant fluid, as well as a swampy area. If the planting site is in a lowland, then drainage should be done first, but it will be best to plant this crop on a small hill. Finding groundwater should be more than two meters from the soil surface. This subspecies is rather unpretentious to the composition of the soil, but still loves slightly acidic, sandy loam and chernozem soils. If the soil at the landing site is highly acidic, then it is worth lowering the acidity level with the help of lime, which is applied at the rate of 3.5 kilograms per 10 square meters.
The place for planting pear Vidnaya (Bumpy) should be prepared in advance, about 6 months before disembarkation. It happens this way:
- A planting hole for a seedling is dug, and it is rather spacious, with an approximate depth of one meter and a width of at least 80 centimeters.
- The topmost fertile soil layer (approximately 20 centimeters thick) should be temporarily postponed. It is necessary to add about 27 kilograms of compost or rotted manure, 80 grams of potassium nitrate, about one kilogram of ordinary wood ash and the same amount of superphosphate.
- This soil mixture is well mixed and poured into the planting hole, and so that there is a small mound. Some experienced farmers advise to cover the hole with plastic wrap after that.
During disembarkation, a number of requirements must also be observed:
- Previously, before planting a seedling, it is required to soak its root system in any root growth stimulator, or in a three percent manganese solution, for about 24 hours. Then treat the roots with a mixture of mullein and clay, then leave for two hours to dry.
- Drive a stick into the middle of the planting hole, the height of which should be one and a half times the seedling. This stick will act as a support for the young plant.
- Lower the seedling into the hole, after carefully straightening its rhizome. In this case, the root collar of the plant should be approximately 8 centimeters above the soil surface.
- The young tree is covered with soil and carefully tamped, while the seedling should be tied to the support.
- A furrow should be made around the plant, at a distance of about half a meta from the tree trunk.
- The planted pear should be watered with warm water in a volume of 35 liters. To keep moisture, it is recommended to make mulch near the trunk circle. Sawdust or compost is used as mulch.
Pear Prominent or Lumpy: Care
The rules for caring for a pear of the Vidnaya (Bugristaya) variety are quite simple. The most important thing is to do the pruning procedure for the plant in a timely manner, apply top dressing and water.
- Pruning.
The constant pruning procedure not only increases the volume of the crop, but also improves its quality. Every spring, the plant is processed for sanitary purposes, for this, old, dry and damaged branches are removed. For trees at a young age, a formative pruning procedure will be quite helpful. As a rule, it is done in early spring, around March-April. During this procedure, the stems of the plant are shortened, and this is done in such a way that several main shoots remain on each tier. Sites of wounds from cuts should be treated with a solution of copper sulfate and then covered with oil-based paint. It should be noted that no more than 25 percent of the entire crown of the plant is removed in one pruning.
- Watering.
A young tree of this variety needs to be watered every day, and this needs to be done with warm water and in an amount of about 19 liters. The plant at a mature age, at about four years old, is watered once every two weeks and in the amount of 65 liters per tree. At a culture age of 6 years, watering can be done only a few times a year: in the spring season before the flowering period, during the formation of the ovary, two weeks before the fruits ripen and in the last days of September, that is, water-charging watering. Sprinkler irrigation is considered the best method of irrigation, as this method is similar to natural precipitation. If there is no special device, then the liquid can be poured into the annular furrow around the plant. After such a procedure, the soil should be loosened and mulched. It is worth noting one important fact that when scheduling the irrigation procedure for this variety, it is required to take into account the weather climatic conditions, thereby preventing severe waterlogging of the soil.
- Top dressing.
If you followed all the tips and rules during the planting of this subspecies, then you can start feeding the tree as early as a couple of years after planting. In the spring, fertilizers containing nitrogen are applied, for example, ammonium nitrate or carbamide, at a time when the shoots begin to grow intensively. Fertilizer is applied in the ratio of 35 kilograms per hectare. Organic fertilizers are applied once every two to three years, for this they take rotted manure, humus or compost. In the autumn, top dressing is applied containing phosphorus and potassium. This subspecies needs feeding two to three times a year, and this must be done during and after watering.
- Disease prevention.
Pear Prominent (Bumpy) has a high immunity to diseases such as scab and powdery mildew, but in nature there are many other infections and harmful insects that love to attack this plant.Everyone knows that it is better to prevent a disease than to cure it later. It is for this pear variety that preventive measures of diseases are carried out in the spring and autumn periods. For this, wood is treated with folk remedies, as well as insecticides. During the growing season, the plant is sprayed with a solution of household soap, soda ash, or an infusion of wood ash. This procedure is performed once every 15 days. The ash solution can not only protect the plant, but also give it nutrition in minerals, which are very rich in. It is worth noting that this pear variety should not be planted near mountain ash, this can increase the risk of cross-infection with diseases.
Outcome
Pear Vidnaya or Bugristaya fell in love with a huge number of gardeners, due to its excellent taste and regular bountiful harvest. This culture is quite unpretentious, due to which even a beginner in this business can easily grow it. Also, this tree has a high level of resistance to cold, so it is great for growing in adverse climatic conditions.
Pear Prominent (Bumpy): reviews of gardeners
There is a huge number of reviews about the Vidnaya pear variety, here are some of them:
“I planted a pear variety Vidnaya about four years ago. And this week they were harvesting their first crop, albeit in small quantities. The fruits are quite large in size, some weigh up to 340 grams, although apparently identical pears have a different taste. Most of them are quite juicy, with a bright sweet-sour taste. Outside, the inner part of the Bumpy pear is tart and harsh, and if you leave such a fruit to ripen, it deteriorates very quickly. "
Irina, 32 years old
“For about six years now, my Prominent Pear. I really like the fact that these fruits, even in an unripe form, have a crispy, rather juicy and dense inner part. There is no astringency in the taste. When the fruit is fully ripe on a tree or in the refrigerator, it becomes soft. But it will not work for a long time, because after 7 days the inner part acquires a dark shade. The taste of the Vidnaya pear variety is very similar to the Chizhovskaya variety, although it is much larger in size. "
