This variety was bred by the talented breeder Anna Ulyanishcheva, a leading employee of the Rossoshansk zonal experimental gardening station, which is located in the Voronezh region. Pear Tikhy Don is a variety obtained by crossing such varieties as Marble and Rossoshanskaya beautiful. The resulting variety had such excellent characteristics that it easily passed all state tests, and it was entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements. The use of the Tikhy Don pear variety in the Central Black Earth regions of our country was recommended.

The tree grows moderately, for 10 years, an increase of about 3 m. The crown is not very thickened, slightly weeping appearance. The bark on the trunk is grayish, the thick branches are brown-gray. Pear Quiet Don: photo of the variety
Thanks to the many years of work of breeders, the Tikhiy Don pear variety is deservedly considered an unpretentious tree. Traditionally grown in the Central regions of the country, but possibly cultivated in the more northern regions. The pear of the Tikhy Don variety has shown its high degree of resistance to various weather conditions. No cases of death from severe frosts were recorded. Even when the temperature drops to -35 degrees, the variety freezes by only 1.0 point. Perhaps the mass death of flowers and buds due to late frosts, but this misfortune can happen to all plants, regardless of the species. It can also easily tolerate prolonged droughts, while not becoming shallow or losing the taste of the fruit.
Algorithm for planting pears Quiet Don:
- Before planting a seedling, you must first select and study it carefully. A three-year-old seedling with a branched trunk is best suited. This variety should be planted best in the fall, but can also be planted in the spring if necessary.
- We choose a sunny place for landing, but on a hill. The pear loves the lowlands, where moisture has accumulated in the soil during the winter. But not to be confused with wetlands.
- We begin preparatory measures already in August. First, we dig up the soil, add superphosphate, potash fertilizers, compost. You can add humus.
- To plant a seedling, dig a hole that is slightly larger in size than the root system of the plant, in the center we place a stake with a height of 70-80 cm.
- A seedling is placed in the hole so that the root collar is 6 cm above the ground. We spread the roots, fill it with soil, in which the seedling was, on top with soil, slightly trample, water and loosen the soil.
- We fasten the seedling with a stake using a twine twisted with an eight.
- When planting several seedlings at the same time, keep the distance between them 7m.
- It is necessary to make a groove around the seedling for convenient watering of the plant and so as not to blur the roots.
- After planting, pour abundantly with warm, settled water. We water one watering can after another, wait until the soil completely settles, when washing out the roots, add earth.
- After this procedure, the soil around the trunk must be mulched, this is a necessary condition to prevent the growth of weeds and to retain moisture in the soil.
Watering rules and feeding
Young, immature seedlings, pear variety Tikhiy Don, should be watered carefully, only in the ditches that were dug during planting, this will prevent root erosion. Constant irrigation is required, especially in the first year of life.
The pear must be fed three times per season. In autumn, this should be done after harvest, after most of the leaves have turned yellow, but have not yet fallen off. The first two years, the seedlings can not be fed, provided that the soil for planting has been fertilized. When feeding in autumn, it is important not to provoke the growth of new shoots, therefore, it is inappropriate to use fertilizers with a nitrogen content. We recommend using a mixture of 2 tbsp superphosphate and 1 tbsp. potassium chloride diluted in 10 liters of water. We alter the solution well and water the plant.
In the spring, feeding is necessary for the development and growth of young, new shoots. For this we use saltpeter, urea, chicken manure and other nitrogen-containing fertilizers.
The third feeding should be done during flowering. During this period, nutritious fertilizers are needed to improve the quality and taste of the fruits. Nitroammofosk can serve as such fertilizer. During the ovary period, you can additionally feed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.
Pear Quiet Don: variety care
- Pruning rules
From the very first season, you should begin to form the crown of the tree, this procedure will continue every year, until the first fruiting. Pruning is done mainly in spring, it is recommended to prune at a level of 0.5 cm from the ground, this will improve the development of the crown and lower branches. On grown trees, it is recommended to do vertical pruning, which does not form the crown correctly.
- Whitewash
Whitewashing will help the tree come out of its winter dormancy. You can buy a ready-made mixture in a store, you can make it yourself by mixing 1.5 kg of clay and 2 kg of lime with a bucket of water. We whiten the lower part, starting from the first branches to the ground, young seedlings can be whitened completely.
- Preparatory processes for winter
First of all, you need to dig up the soil around the plant, water it well with water, then cover the soil around with humus with the addition of peat and sawdust. The layer should be at least 20 cm in order to protect the root system from frost. After the snow falls, you can bury the plants in the snow, it will wrap the tree like a carpet, protect it from frost and provide additional moisture, which will last even before summer.
- Yield
The pear variety Tikhy Don, as we have already said, is considered fruitful, begins to bear fruit in the third year. This is early enough for trees, for which this variety is prized by gardeners. In the first year of fruiting, the tree can already bring 20 kg. fruits, and by 10 years up to 70 kg. harvest. A big plus is also that pears do not crumble and do not shrink. Harvesting begins in early September and until November, as the fruits ripen.
Diseases and pests
Pear Quiet Don is very resistant to various diseases and pests. It can be affected by septoria (white rot) - manifests itself in the form of grayish spots with a brownish border. The period of the disease falls on the end of May, wet weather can provoke. They are treated with nitraferone, making a solution of 10 liters. water 300 grams. Brown spots inherent in all varieties of pears are not at all scary for the Quiet Don.
All trees in the garden are susceptible to rodents; to prevent gnawing, it is necessary to wrap the tree trunk with several layers of thick paper.
They can also be attacked by the pear copper. These are small flying fleas. In this case, the tree should be treated with pesticides.
To combat fungal diseases, the pear should be periodically sprayed with fungicides.
As we found out from this article, the Quiet Don pear is a unique hybrid plant, specially invented for our conditions. Its uniqueness is that it does not require any special growing conditions and bears fruit already in the third year. And in usefulness and in the presence of a huge amount of trace elements, a pear is many times superior to apples. Pear Quiet Don is exactly the variety that you have been looking for for so long.
