Pear Lear
Content:
Pears are slightly behind apple trees in popularity, but still, gardeners are increasingly planting these trees with delicious juicy tasty and aromatic fruits on their plots. Among the variety of varieties of pear trees, you can choose exactly the variety that will feel comfortable in your region, adequately meeting the summer heat or winter frosts, while the climate features will not affect the health of the tree and its yield. In order to make the right choice, you need to study as much information as possible and today we will tell you about the Lira pear variety. Pear Lira is famous not only for its yield and large fruits, but also for its high winter hardiness in the weather conditions of the Central region.
Pear Lira: variety description and characteristics
Pear Lira is considered a late autumn or early winter pear variety. At the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding of Fruit Crops, a team of scientists consisting of E.N.Sedov, A.V.Parshin, M.V. Mikheeoi, N.G. Krasova and N.M. Glazova worked on obtaining a new variety by crossing "Winter Bere" with "Forest Beauty".
- Description of the appearance of the tree.
Compared to many other varieties, the Lyra pear can be called a tall tree. A wide, but not particularly dense crown, has the shape of a wide pyramid. Shoots are colored brownish-brown, have an arched shape. The kidneys are bent, conical. Long-pointed oval-shaped leaf plates with a helical twisted apex are colored dark green, their surface is smooth and shiny. The leaves are curved downward, their edge is solid, wavy.
Pear Lira blooms with white flowers, collected in inflorescences.
Pear Lira is fast-growing, the first harvest can be harvested in the fourth or fifth year, and in exceptional cases - in the third year.
- Description of the fruits.
Lira pears are large in size, the average weight of the fruit is more than 200 grams. Their shape is classic "pear-shaped", sometimes there is a slight bevel.
The pulp of the Lira pear variety is white with a creamy shade, contains a large amount of juice. The texture of the fruit is fine-grained, dense. The aroma is weak, but very pleasant, and the taste can be described as sweet with a subtle sourness.
The removable ripeness of the fruit begins in mid-September. A timely and properly harvested crop is able to ripen and be stored at a slightly lower temperature at least until the end of December, and in some cases even longer. When harvesting, remove the fruit along with the stalk, this will extend the shelf life of the fruit.
The peduncle of Lyra pears is very small in size, because of this, with a very strong wind, some of the fruits may crumble.
From a culinary point of view, Lira pears are universal - they are very tasty fresh and are perfect both for preparing preparations (dried fruits, preserves, compotes, jams) and for all kinds of desserts.
Pear Lira: planting varieties
Having decided to purchase Lira pear seedlings of a certain variety, do not rush to purchase. Study information not only about varieties, but also about various fruit and berry nurseries, consult with familiar gardeners, ask where they get planting material. For planting, you must choose annual or biennial plants.
Healthy and strong seedlings can only be purchased from a seller who values his reputation and will not sell you wild game instead of a varietal pear.
50% of success in growing pears is associated with the right choice of place for planting seedlings. For a pear tree, you need to choose the sunniest place, ideally on a hill or on a slope. The size and taste of your future harvest depends on the amount of sun.
Remember that Lyra will grow into a tall and spreading tree, so when choosing a place for a seedling, take into account its final size. Place the seedlings at a sufficient distance from the walls of the house or other structures, which will not only interfere with the growth of the tree, but also create an unwanted shadow.
Like any seedlings, the Lyra pear can be planted both in the spring and in the fall, but still, most gardeners prefer to carry out planting work in the spring.
Specify at what depth the groundwater passes. If the depth turns out to be less than 2.5 meters, then you will need to build an artificial elevation for planting pears, so that waterlogging does not cause the tree to die in the future.
It is necessary to prepare a planting hole for a seedling in advance, its diameter should exceed the volume of the root system: as a rule, the depth of such a hole is about a meter, and its diameter is from 70 to 90 centimeters. Install a peg in the bottom of the pit, to which your pear will be attached at first.
If the groundwater does not lie deep enough or the soil in your area is too dense, then a drainage layer of gravel, expanded clay or broken brick should be laid at the bottom of the planting pit. Then place a mound of nutritious soil on top of the drainage layer, which consists of fertile soil, compost or humus. You should also add some ash, a handful of potash fertilizer and 2 handfuls of phosphate fertilizer.
Then lower the seedling into the hole, spread its roots on a mound of nutritious soil and carefully begin to fill the hole. Make sure that the root collar remains above the soil surface, attach the seedling to the support without injuring the bark. Then pour the circle around the trunk using at least two buckets of warm water (it will be enough to put the buckets of water in the sun in advance, the main thing is that it is not cold).

When planting in spring, the first time it is necessary to regularly water the seedlings so that they adapt faster (in autumn, watering, as a rule, occurs due to rains). After watering, it is imperative to loosen the trunk circle, removing all weeds from it.
After planting, the seedling should be cut, shortening its trunk by 1 / 5-1 / 4, and all main branches by about a third. The next year, pruning will be less radical, its goal is to give the crown of the tree a tapered shape. In the future, the pruning procedure will more likely perform a sanitary or cosmetic function, that is, in the process you will remove damaged, frozen or broken branches.
It is imperative to remember that it is necessary to carry out pruning only with sharp instruments, which must first be disinfected. Places of cuts after the procedure must be treated with garden varnish.
If you have properly prepared a nutritious soil mixture for the planting pit, then in the next three years the tree may not be fertilized. In the future, once every two to three years, organic fertilizers (the same compost or humus) should be applied to the near-trunk circle, and with the help of mineral fertilizers, foliar dressing should be carried out on the foliage - this way the trees absorb nutrients much faster.
Lira pear trees have very good winter hardiness in the Central and Central Black Earth regions. When the air temperature dropped to -35 ... -37 degrees (winter 1996), the trees were damaged, but this temperature in this region can be considered extremely low.
Diseases and harmful insects

Pear Lira demonstrates high resistance to scab, but there are other unpleasant pear diseases: fruit rot, rust, fire blight. In addition to diseases, one should beware of the appearance and spread of harmful insects, such as aphids, gall mites, copperheads and others.
To prevent such problems, a preventive treatment of pear trees should be carried out before flowering. For the prevention of diseases, preparations containing copper are used (repeated processing is carried out in the fall, after leaf fall). Treat trees with a broad-spectrum insecticide to prevent insects from appearing.
In addition to using chemicals, do not forget to maintain cleanliness by removing all fallen leaves, clearing the trunk of flaky bark and all kinds of lichens, carry out sanitary pruning, weed, clean and loosen the trunk circle. All plant residues should be burned. The trunk of the tree and the lower "skeletal" branches can be whitewashed with a solution of lime, clay and mullein with the addition of ferrous sulfate.
Conclusion
Taking care of the tree, you provide him with comfort, and the Lira pear in turn gives you a harvest of stunning large and juicy pears. Lira pears can be stored for several months, and therefore you will not experience a lack of fresh vitamins.
