Pear Grand Champion is a variety bred in America. Fruits ripen in autumn. A clone of the selection variety is Gorhem. However, the Grand differs from the clone in that it has a more moderate height and a neat crown. The fruits of the Grand Champion pear variety are distinguished by their golden tint.
Pear Grand Champion: variety description and characteristics
The Grand Champion pear tree is not very tall, and the crown is moderately dense. The main branches are located at an angle of forty to forty-five degrees. Shoots are poorly formed, hence the compactness of the crown.
The fruits are located most often on the ringlets. The pears themselves have a smooth surface and weigh up to 220 grams. They are often elongated in shape.
The peel on the fruit is thin, almost imperceptible, and the flesh is creamy, tender and juicy. To taste with a subtle sourness.
Pollination is required for fruiting. So pollinators for the Grand Champion pear can be: Bere Ardanpon, Bere Bosk, Vassa, Zolotistaya, Crimean winter, Yakimovskaya, Dessertnaya, Lazurnaya.
Features of the variety
Harvested at a fairly late date. Fruiting is good on quince. Quince stock (VA-29) is often used, necessarily of low concentration.
Thanks to the stock, you will see the harvest already in the third or fourth year after planting. In the early years there are not so many fruits, but at the age of fifteen or twenty years of age, up to 14 tons can be harvested from one hectare.
In warm Black Sea conditions, harvesting occurs at the end of September, in cooler areas later. Despite the fact that the fruits sit firmly on the cuttings, pears will fall with late harvest. Therefore, it is important not to miss the moment.
Pear Grand Champion is very demanding. It is important that the soil is always moist, and most importantly, that the tree is not in places open to winds.
The pear variety Grand Champion is resistant to such a common disease as portia, but you should pay attention to thermal burns, since the susceptibility of the leaves is average. In winter, skeletal branches come across with cold, and since the regeneration of the variety is low, it is better to prevent freezing.
It is worth noting that the fruits are well adapted for transportation. Experts estimate the presentation of the fruit at 85-90%. When stored in a refrigerator, pears can lie until the new year. However, with prolonged storage in the cold, the fruit withers.

The positive qualities of the Grand Champion pear variety include high early maturity, high resistance to scab disease, and most importantly, a pleasant pulp taste.
There are also disadvantages. So low cold tolerance and relative yield are one of the main disadvantages. The variety also very rarely has striped fruits, without dots, and this is important for the reproductive function of the plant.
Since 1988, the Grand Champion pear variety has been officially confirmed. It was widely used in Ukraine. Pear Grand Champion is appreciated in the circles of breeders for its compactness.
