Hydrangea Bombshell was born thanks to breeders from Holland. They have been working on this variety for several years in order to end up with a flower with the best characteristics. It was registered in 2010 and quickly gained its popularity in Europe. The authorship belongs to the Dutch breeder Alex Frederick Shomeiker.
In Russia, the variety can not often be found in gardens, since it was brought to our country only recently. Therefore, by planting such a plant on its site, the garden will really acquire uniqueness.
This is a small shrub plant, the height of the Bombshell hydrangea does not exceed 80 centimeters, but in diameter it can grow up to 120 centimeters. The leaves are elongated, oval, and rather large. Their color depends on the composition of the soil, it can be emerald, or it can be light green.
The Bombshell panicle hydrangea blooms from mid-July to late autumn. During it, large inflorescences envelop the entire bush. They resemble a wide pyramid in shape, the height of which reaches 15 centimeters, and the width is 11 centimeters. The inflorescences are collected from numerous sterile flowers, the diameter of which is about 3 centimeters, and a small number of small flowers bearing fruit. Petals change their color during the season. At first, they are painted in cream or white colors with a slight shade of green, and later they acquire pink shades.
Due to the large weight of the brooms, the branches begin to tilt towards the ground, making the shape of the bush rounded.
The Bombshell panicle hydrangea begins to bloom one year after being planted in the garden. But for its abundant flowering, you must follow some rules for planting and further care.

For good growth, development and flowering in the future, you need to properly plant the plant in the garden. This can be helped by observing some rules.
The best time for planting will be spring, since the plant will have time to adapt to new conditions and take root before the onset of cold weather.
Planting activities are carried out as soon as the threat of frost disappears. Disembarkation can be carried out in the fall, but only in the southern regions of the country.
In the first two years, they must be covered for the winter with the help of special materials.
The best place to plant is in a slightly shaded area where the midday sun will not touch the plant. It must also be protected from wind and drafts. Areas located in the shade will not work, as the plant will grow more slowly there, and the colors will be faded. If planted in an area open to the sun throughout the day, the flowers will begin to shrink and dry.
Planting holes should be 70 centimeters in diameter. Peat, sand, humus, fertile soil are added to it in a ratio of 2/1/1/2.
It is important to know that lime, dolomite flour and ash should not be added to the soil, as they are bad for hydrangeas.
Before planting a seedling, it is necessary to shorten the shoots and roots, and then carefully spread them and lower them into the hole. Next, the seedling is filled up so that no air layers remain and the root collar remains above the ground. After planting, abundant watering is carried out using a bucket of warm water for each plant.
Bombshell Hydrangea Care
Despite the fact that this variety of hydrangea is very unpretentious and is able to grow even on the roadsides of motorways, the abundance and splendor of flowering can be achieved only with some care.
The plant needs regular watering, proper pruning, timely feeding and preventive measures aimed at combating diseases and pests.
During the growing season, 4 dressings are carried out. Spring feeding is carried out using organic fertilizers. Thanks to them, the plant will actively grow, increasing its green mass and forming a large number of inflorescences. The next feeding is carried out when buds begin to form on the plant. During this period, potassium, phosphate and urea are suitable. In the middle of the summer season, complex mineral fertilizers are added to the soil. This will help prolong flowering. In the fall, plants should receive fertilizers based on phosphorus and potassium.
Watering should be carried out regularly, the soil should not be allowed to dry out, but there should be no stagnation of water.
Pruning is done in early spring. During it, it is necessary to remove all the shoots, leaving only 10 healthy and strong ones.
Diseases and pests: control methods
Bombshell, due to its strong immunity, is able to withstand most diseases. Those diseases that may arise are associated with improper care or with the wrong place for planting.
- Chlorosis - this disease develops due to the high content of alkali and a small amount of iron in the soil. You can determine the disease by yellowed leaves. Copper sulfate treatment will help to cope with the disease.
- Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that manifests itself on the leaves in the form of yellow spots that darken over time. Foundation or Bordeaux liquid will help to cope with it.
- Gray rot is a fungal disease that is provoked by high humidity and coolness, especially if the bushes are thickened and grown in the shade. You can understand that the plant is sick by brown spots. If detected, it is necessary to immediately carry out the treatment with fungicides.
- Tracheomycosis - this fungus settles on the root system and destroys it. Signs of the disease are yellowing of the entire ground part of the bush. Fungicides are used to combat it.
All drugs are used as indicated in the instructions on the package.
Among insects destructive to hydrangea bushes, you can find nematodes, leaf beetles, snails, aphids and leafworms.
You can cope with them with the help of insecticides or decoctions prepared according to folk recipes.
