Gladioli planting: how, when and at what depth to plant
Content:
Gladioli planting - royal flowers, I fell in love with them as a child and now I have a huge flowerbed with these beauties at my dacha. But there were also problems, not all of my bulbs germinated, a lot of plants died. Some rotted, others dried up. Very often my flowerbed was struck illness and infections. This went on for quite a long time, until a friend of mine shared with me the secrets of growing gladioli. These tips helped me and now I have the most luxurious flower bed, to the envy of all my neighbors. Today I want to teach you how to properly grow these beautiful flowers in the garden.
Gladioli landing: choosing a place
Gladioli are bulbous plants. They are not particularly capricious and demanding, they are distinguished by very beautiful and long flowering. They look spectacular both in a bouquet and on a flower bed. In order for gladioli to bloom for a long time and have bright flowers, you need to carefully follow the rules of agricultural technology. We start by choosing a place for the flower bed.
Gladioli do not tolerate shade, so the site must be very well lit and located on a hill so that stagnant water does not form.
1) Do not plant gladioli in a damp or wetland area, this can lead to the development of fungal infections.
2) When planting, take into account the amount of light and sun on the site. With a lack of sun, plants will slow down their growth and begin to bloom very late.
3) Groundwater should not flow near the flower bed, the gladiolus bulbs will be saturated with moisture and begin to rot.
4) The flower bed should be at a decent distance from the trees.
They cast a shadow, which is detrimental to flowers. Also, pests often settle in large quantities on garden plantings. Pests can cause great harm to gladioli. An unsuccessfully chosen place can provoke not only diseases and poor flowering. The gladiolus will no longer form corms and next year the planting material will be of very poor quality.
Gladioli planting: preparing the soil
The choice of soil needs to be given special attention; I start to prepare the flower bed for planting in the fall. Gladioli love loose and soft soil with a high sand content. If your soil is not suitable, then you need to add additives. If the soil is peaty, we add sand. We dilute the sandy soil with peat. If the soil is high in clay, then sand and peat should be added in equal proportions. The acidity level of the soil should be neutral. If the soil is very acidic, sprinkle it with lime. Prepare the soil: - get rid of weeds and dig up the soil well; - the most favorable place for a flower bed, this is the garden where plants from the legume family previously grew; - organic residues must be carefully removed, otherwise an outbreak of fungal diseases may occur; - the beds should not be very wide, but rather long; - in the spring we dig up the bed again and apply a complex of mineral fertilizers.
We process the bulbs
Three weeks before planting, I begin to cook the bulbs. I clean them well of scales and lumps of soil. I do this very carefully so as not to harm the sprouts that are hiding under the husk. After the bulbs are cleaned, I carefully examine each for the presence of diseases and pests. If a baby has signs of a disease, in no case should it be planted, it is best to burn a diseased bulb. I process healthy planting material with garlic, using chemicals very rarely, since they do more harm than good.Processing: - I soak the onion for several hours in an infusion of chopped garlic; - in the fall, as soon as I dig up, I also subject the bulbs to garlic processing; - garlic is a natural antiseptic, and copes well with many diseases and parasites. Garlic can also be processed with potassium permanganate: - soak the bulbs in a steep solution of manganese for about half an hour and dry thoroughly; - in the fall, we do the same procedure, only we increase the time the bulbs stay in the solution. I usually soak the bulbs in manganese for about an hour. You can also use growth simulators, this measure will allow you to harden gladioli before planting and they will be more resistant to disease and temperature changes.
Landing technique
Gladioli should be planted as soon as the soil temperature rises above 10 degrees. When planting, gladiolus bulbs must be buried. Since gladiolus has a very strong stem, it needs very good support. In the process of growing flowers, the soil must be sprinkled periodically. Before planting, it is necessary to water the soil well and apply fertilizers. Planting bulbs is best at weekly intervals, so you can extend the flowering of your flower bed for a longer period.
Outcome
1) In order for the flowerbed to bloom profusely, carefully observe the agrotechnics and temperature conditions during planting.
2) Before planting, be sure to treat the bulbs with antiseptics and growth simulators.
3) Plant the bulbs deep enough so that the future flower has enough space for support.
