Saintpaulia is an annual or perennial belonging to the Violet family (Violaceae), class Dicotyledonous. The violet is very popular for indoor cultivation. Most countries have clubs with over 100 varieties, sports and varieties of violets, as well as many private collectors. Sport violets Don Juan is a flower that at the stage of the growing season has acquired differences from the main varietal characteristics. The emergence of sports can occur due to small deviations in the conduct of care procedures and due to differences in the microclimate. There are ampelous, miniature, semi-double, succulent and terry varieties. There is also a classification by color: white, pink, purple, blue violet.
Violet RS-Don Juan is a variety, but it can become a parent of more than 100 sports. It belongs to the violet category. This look is a novelty, it was brought out by private collectors in 2013, it is named "Don Juan", as it is very attractive, its historical hero had this quality.
The violet variety Don Juan is distinguished by a large rosette, up to forty cm in diameter. The leaves are dark green in color, wide, have a pink border, velvety, wavy. The flowers are terry or semi-double structure, painted in a bright dark purple or purple-black color, have a border of light green, in rare cases, yellow. The velvety surface of the flowers is in the form of an asterisk, reaching up to six cm in diameter. The inner surface of the petals is light in color.
Interesting fact. At the moment, on a global scale, there are more than eight thousand five hundred registered varieties of domestic violets. The species is officially counted by the American Society of Saintpaulia Lovers - AVSA, which began its work in 1946. It registers new varieties and publishes a catalog with their detailed characteristics every year.
The more wavy the foliage, the more lush the floral border will be. Blossoming of Saintpaulia in indoor conditions occurs all year round. The usual period lasts from March to December days (two to three months a year there is a dormant period), but it may be different, it depends on agricultural technology. Some violets bloom all year round, and the plant does not rest. The cuttings take root well. Usually sports violets Don Juan have differences in the color of the flowers.

The difficulty in caring for a violet variety Don Juan in room conditions is designated as average, but it has its own characteristics. If something is accidentally done not carefully in terms of care, then the plant can wither irrevocably. The fact that Saintpaulia does not bloom is considered a very popular phenomenon, especially among novice flower growers.
This difficulty directly indicates that the rules of cultivation were violated, which do not differ for different varietal forms.Watering, lighting and temperature conditions are of prime importance in the development of a flower, in this regard, detailed information on this will be given below.
Location and lighting.
The violet variety Don Juan is very light-requiring. He is whimsical in lighting, but it is impossible to allow the direct rays of the sun to fall too hard on him. Ideally, the container will be located in a south-facing room with diffused illumination. When growing a plant on a southern window, you need to take care of shading up to the growth line of the bush. This will contribute to the diffuseness of the lighting, making its action easier.
As shading, you can use curtains, woven material, foil, blinds. It will be a good idea to place the container with saintpaulia on the kitchen windowsill. Like other houseplants, the violet culture loves the warm air of the kitchen, its moderate levels of moisture and soft light. In winter, the container on the window is located so that the leaves do not come into contact with the cold glass.
Violet RS-Don Juan loves light, daylight hours should last twelve to thirteen hours a day, in this regard, if after dark time, you can additionally moderately supplement the flower with the help of artificial devices, then the violet will delight you with that will bloom magnificently and colorfully.
Temperature conditions and air humidity.
The best daytime temperature conditions for the violet Don Juan are in the range of twenty to twenty-five degrees all year round. In the summer, in the heat, it is advisable to transfer the plant to a cool place or to control the temperature with fans and air conditioners. The root system is very delicate, it is afraid of sudden changes in temperature conditions, for this reason, when the room is ventilated, containers with violets are transferred to the heat. The temperature regime at night should differ from the daytime by two to three degrees. From drafts or cold air currents, the flower can wither.
It is important to keep the air humid. For this purpose, a container filled with water is installed near the container, or the container is moved to a tray with water (bottom irrigation), or specialized air humidifiers are installed. The humidity level is fifty to seventy percent. If the humidity exceeds seventy percent, rot may form.
Interesting fact. Since ancient times, writers and rulers have worshiped the exquisite and quivering Saintpaulias. The candied flower was a favorite food of the Austrian Empress Sissi. And today this wonderful delicacy is made in old confectionery shops in Vienna and is considered a sign of love.
Violet Don Juan: home care

Creating good conditions for growing PC-Don Juan violets is not enough to guarantee the development of a strong bush. It is necessary to take care of the following: observe the principles of watering, adhere to the regularity of fertilizing, introducing the necessary vitamins into the soil, and also correctly trim and transplant the flower.
Watering.
It is impossible for the water to fall on the leaves and flowers, because the violet can rot or overcooled. Most flower growers have learned how to water directly into the container, but it is still ideal to water the flower through a tray or immerse it in a container filled with water. For this purpose, a container with a flower for fifteen to twenty minutes is placed in a larger container or in a deep pan with water (compulsorily settled for 24 hours). The temperature of the water should be slightly warmer than the temperature in the room (twenty one to twenty four degrees). When calculating the frequency of watering, start from the microclimate. Watering is carried out in such a way that the surface soil layer is constantly moistened. If the soil crust dries up, the plant may die.
In the heating season, in addition to watering, you need to moisten the soil in another way.For this purpose, a container with a flower is placed in a tray with warm liquid in such a way that there is no contact between them. You can use specialized moisturizers such as wet pebbles.
Fertilization.
Feeding Saintpaulia is required, like other house plants. It is possible not to add top dressing, but 2 months after planting, the soil in the container will be depleted, and in order not to transplant the flower again, it is fed. The main nutrients for violets are nitrogen substances (they affect the formation of foliage, so they are introduced to young plants), phosphorus and potassium supplements (these minerals affect the flowering period, which means they need to be introduced during the growing season). The main thing is to observe the dosage, in this regard, it is required to carefully study the instructions for use.
Top dressing is usually applied by these methods.
Through the ground. For this purpose, fertilizers are diluted in warm, settled water, watering is carried out, care must be taken to ensure that the solution does not get on the leaves.
Root way. A container with a violet is placed in a tray with a solution for a certain period of time.
Foliar dressing (by leaves). Thanks to this method, the flower quickly accepts food elements, but you need to be very careful during the procedure, it is not advisable to use the method for novice florists.
Fertilizer mixtures are: in liquid form ("Mister Color", "Master Color", "Agrecol-gel", "Green Doctor", "Growth"); in the form of crystals (Royal Mix, Clean Sheet, NPK +); organic ("Separated biohumus", "Green guy", "Osmokot", "Gumi-Omi", "Green Decor", "Master agro").
Violets RS-Don Juan are fed once every ten to fourteen days. In autumn and winter, the plant enters a dormant period; at this stage, the flower does not need to be saturated with minerals and mixtures.
Circumcision procedure.
The violet of the RS-Don Juan variety is not a crop that grows strongly. Usually, it forms a compact rosette, and leaves with a lush nozzle are not produced. But Saintpaulia is also sometimes required to be cut to form a compact and decorative bush. As you know, the violet has 3 leaf rows, which are the peduncles and the main part of the flower, for this reason the old leaves of the lower row are removed.
This manipulation is performed by plucking, if it is not possible, then a sharpened and disinfected instrument is used. Remember to prune dried and yellow leaves and stepsons. You can prune the foliage of the lower row, knocking out of the bush, for example, its growth occurs to the sides, leaves of a different type or elongated upward. The sections are treated with powdered charcoal. This will keep the wound free from disease, water, and harmful insects. Processing is usually carried out on March or April days, after the bush comes out of hibernation.
In addition to the formation of a bush, pruning can help the beneficial elements and vitamins to be absorbed equally into the young leaves. The flower will not waste efforts on old and wilted leaves, thereby forming a young, strong and leafy rosette.
Transplanting.
Transplanting Saintpaulias must be carried out, the procedure is performed once a year. Over time, the soil becomes dense, salts accumulate, the acid level rises, useful elements that do not enter the flower are lost, flowering stops. This difficulty is one of the most important that growers may face.
Violets need a soil that allows air to pass through well, in this regard, a change in soil will saturate the flowers with air and trace elements.
In order for the violet RS-Don Juan to adapt better, transplanting is carried out in the spring season, before the growing season.
Algorithm.
- A container for transplanting is being prepared. It should be one size larger than the previous one, as the flower adapts faster in tight spaces. The container must necessarily have holes for water evaporation. It is advisable to take pots made of plastic, because containers made of clay and ceramics quickly absorb water, and this is not necessary for flowers. A drainage layer of expanded clay, broken brick, wet soil and peat is laid at the bottom of the container, then the container is half filled with soil. The earth is selected moderately acidic.
- The bush is pulled out of the old container, for this purpose it is turned over, shaken a little, and taken out. If the root system tightly wraps around the bottom of the container, then this is considered another bell that you are replanting the flower on time.
- Next, the roots are carefully cleaned of the old soil. Old leaves, side rosettes and wilted plant fragments are removed.
- The bush is planted in a new container, the soil is filled up, tamped tightly.
- A young plant is watered one day after transplanting, thanks to this, rooting will be more successful.
- The old container can be washed, treated with hot water and used for other vegetation.
Violet Don Juan: reproduction

Violet Don Juan reproduces in five ways. They will be presented in detail below.
Propagation by cuttings. The most widespread and simplest cultivation method. For this purpose, a leaf is pinched off from the main bush (along with the petiole) and planted into the ground fifty to one hundred mm deep, everything here depends on the size of the cutting. The leaf is taken average in size from 2 rows of the rosette, since it is considered fruitful, at the same time it will not harm the parent flower. After planting the cutting, abundant watering of the soil is carried out, but do not forget that water should not get on the leaf itself. The container is covered with polyethylene or a jar to create a greenhouse.
In order for the sprout to take root, the temperature regime is observed within twenty-one degrees, in this regard, it is advisable to propagate by this method in spring and summer. If the procedure is performed correctly, after thirty days, the cutting will take root and let the children go (later they will be deposited from the parent sprout). Cuttings take root in ninety percent. Sometimes the cutting is initially rooted in warm water and only then is planted in the ground. Thus, you can look at the development of a very delicate root; in the future, it must be planted very carefully in the ground.
Division of the bush. This method is used when the outlet is abundantly overgrown with new bushes and when there is a lack of space. To this end, the rosette is carefully pulled out of the container, the neoplasms are separated, these are independent plants. They are transplanted into smaller containers. So we get more than one brand new Saintpaulia and free up space so that the old violet fully develops. This method can preserve the characteristics of the variety.
Getting a sprout from a peduncle. This method is not very popular, since a large number of flower growers do not know how the peduncle is correctly separated, and there is also a fear of damage to the flower, therefore, the attitude towards this method is doubtful. But if you are ready for experiments and without fear of difficulties, you can be sure that after the separation of the peduncle, the plant will delight you with the fact that it will bloom even more magnificently and richly. First, the most decorative and powerful peduncle is separated. It is cut with a pointed tool at an angle so that the interval from the cut to the leaves is at least one cm. The flowers and buds need to be pinched off, after which the peduncle must be planted in a shallow container in the ground or in another composition and kept in greenhouse conditions, as with cuttings. After the plant has taken root and new leaves have formed, the violet is transplanted to a permanent growing area.Remember that the greenhouse needs thirty to forty minutes of daily ventilation. The sprout from the peduncle will turn out after one and a half to two months.
Reproduction by seeds. This method is more complicated. Flowers take root in seventy percent of cases and beginner flower growers. Using this method, you need to understand that temperature and microclimatic conditions are important for flowers.
If you deviate by even one percent from agricultural technology, you may not achieve germination. To propagate a violet with seeds, you can buy seeds of your favorite varieties in a special store. Then they are planted in the ground according to the type of seedlings: greenhouse conditions are arranged, the supply of warm and humid air is ensured, the plants are regularly fed, after which the seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place.
Reproduction by own seeds. This method is used by professional breeders. The pollen is manually (using specialized tools) transferred from the stamen to the pistil. Seeds form and grow within eleven to twelve months.
Cultivation difficulties
Violet Don Juan is whimsical, in this regard, if you do not take care of the flower, it may stop blooming or completely die. Often, gardeners have difficulties due to illiterate watering. In violets, this is a thin line between lack and excess of fluid. Since both of these phenomena are painful for her. When the leaves turn yellow, the flower signals that it is in a room with dry air and needs to be thoroughly watered and humidified. If the leaves are curled, then this suggests the same. When the leaves and peduncles wither, the plant tells that it had an excess amount of moisture and rot has formed in the root system. In this situation, the flower is transplanted into a new soil, watering stops until the plant recovers. In addition, the violet RS-Don Juan is treated with fungicidal agents. If spots of a dark brown color appeared on the leaves, this means that the plant was watered with cold, unsettled water.
If the illumination is disturbed, then this can also lead to some problems. With sunburns and excessively bright illumination on the leaves, spots of a light yellow color appear or the foliage begins to turn pale. In this situation, the container with the violet is moved to another room, and the damaged foliage is subsequently cut off.
In addition to biological problems, there are infections transmitted by pests (whiteflies, mealybugs, aphids, spider mites). If you find a harmful insect (for example, a spider mite has woven sticky little cobwebs under the leaves and peduncles), then immediately use specialized means. Insecticidal preparations ("Fitoverm", "Aktofit", "Anti-mite", "Fitotsid-R") can help. All damaged foliage is removed from the bush, after which it is abundantly sprayed with a solution of the drug and covered with polyethylene for two or three days. This manipulation is repeated three times every five days.
