Davallia: description of indoor fern

Davallia is a fern epiphyte, belongs to the Davalliev family, it includes about 40 species. This culture is not very whimsical to care, it can grow well at home. Wild ferns can be found in the Chinese, Polynesian, Japanese tropics.
Openwork young leaves of the Davallia fern are dissected into elongated segments with denticles, have a bright green coloration, and old leaves are green-yellow. Young leaves, the so-called fronds, are formed during the entire growing season. At the end of autumn, their growth stops, the fern goes to rest. After lengthening daylight hours, young leaves reappear.
This fern-like plant differs from other ferns in the presence of thickened creeping roots, painted in a brown shade, covered with a silvery fluff. The roots grow vertically, and very quickly they begin to go beyond the container. In length, these roots can reach 0.9 m. Because of this characteristic, the culture is also called "rabbit feet" or "squirrel feet". The roots do not lend themselves to cutting.
In the home microclimate, the Davallia plant is often cultivated in a hanging basket. The roots are in free flight and hang from the outer surface of the container, and a large number of leaves cover them on top.
Under indoor conditions, the following varieties are cultivated: Fijian davallia (Davallia fejeensis), Davallia dissecta, Davallia pentaphylla, Davallia trichomanoides. These varieties differ from each other in the size of the bush, the type of segments.

Illumination level.
The Davallia fern is photophilous, good illumination is required, but it is also necessary to shade the plant from direct sunlight. In the summer season, it is advisable to put the bush by the window on the east side, illuminated by the sun only in the morning.
Temperature conditions.
In the summer season, the Davallia plant feels great under temperature conditions in the range of 18-22 degrees, and in winter - the temperature should not drop to 15 degrees or more. The culture must be protected from cold drafts. Under low temperature conditions in the room, all the leaves may fall off, but when the spring season comes, young leaves still appear.
Humidity level.
The house fern Davallia can be grown at low air humidity, if the humidity is high, then young leaves begin to grow actively. In the summer, it is advisable to rearrange the davallia in the place that is shaded (balcony, veranda, garden area). The Davallia plant responds favorably when sprayed frequently. The hanging roots should not be allowed to dry out.
Watering.
The Davallia flower is watered, as a rule, with a little warm and compulsorily settled water. In the summer season, abundant watering is applied, the soil must be constantly moistened, in winter, moderate watering is carried out. In the winter season, when almost all the leaves have fallen, the Davallia fern is watered more poorly. But it is necessary to ensure that the soil does not dry out.
Fertilization.
Top dressing is applied from May to August a couple of times every 30 days. For this purpose, fertilizer complexes are used for decorative leafy vegetation (the dosage should be ½ diluted with water). Fertilizers are not applied in winter.
Davallia transplant.
The Davallia indoor fern is transplanted in the spring, if necessary, while the roots are spreading out of the container. The container for transplanting Davallia is selected in a small size, since the root system is located at the surface soil layer.
Soil mix.
The primer is slightly acidic. To independently obtain a nutrient substrate, leaf, peat and sod soil are mixed, sand, sphagnum moss are added in a proportional ratio of 2: 2: 1: 1: 1, respectively. You can also mix leaf, turf and sand in equal amounts. It is advisable to add charcoal to the soil mixture.

Reproduction of Davallia is carried out by dividing the rhizome. To root the plant, a moist soil is applied. Each plot should have branches with leaves and roots. Young bushes are formed on the roots. The cut legs do not go deep into the ground, but only are fixed on its surface layer.
Difficulty growing a plant

- If the Davallia leaves darken and dry, this means that the air in the room is poorly humidified, or this is due to the increased temperature conditions in the room.
- Yellowing, twisting, falling off of leaves, too fast wilting and falling of young foliage - this means that the air in the room has a low temperature, and these symptoms are also observed when watering the plant with cold water and in cold drafts.
- The wilting of the leaves of the Davallia flower, their coloring in a pale gray color occurs due to the very intense sunlight.
- In the winter season, the foliage of Davallia turns yellow and dries up - this is normal for winter, when the spring season comes, the leaves will reappear.
