Daikon: uak to grow in the suburbs
Daikon is an unpretentious plant.
When growing a daikon, certain requirements must be observed:
1. Prepare the soil well. It is necessary to dig the earth to a great depth. Daikon can have a length from fifteen centimeters to two and a half meters, and a weight from two hundred to five hundred grams to thirty kilograms.
2. It is important to remember that daikon grows best on short days of light, as it blooms quickly on long days. It should be planted in early spring or summer in early August.
Seeds are sown one at a time and to a depth of five centimeters. The distance between the seeds should be thirty centimeters, and between the rows - forty centimeters. If you planted seeds in the spring, then you do not need to water much. The earth is wet. And in the summer, when sowing, the wells must be poured with water with Extrasol dissolved in it (10 ml per 10 liters of water).
After sowing the seeds, the holes should be covered with damp earth and covered with rotted manure or humus. When the seeds germinate, add the mulch again after pouring. Dry grass, weeds, hay are suitable for mulch.
3. It is necessary to thin out. With a dense planting, flowering also begins early. The root crop will not grow. If a flower arrow appears early, it must be removed in order for the root crop to develop normally.
4. It is necessary to constantly loosen the soil and water. But do not fill it, otherwise the plant may get sick with mucous bacteriosis.
5. Daikon, like any plant, needs feeding. You need to feed when shoots and leaves appear. For feeding, use Extrasol with Aquarins.
6. Provide prevention against pests: fleas and cabbage flies. As soon as the shoots have appeared, they should be sprinkled with tobacco dust or ash or ground red pepper. To help the dust adhere better, you can spray the seedlings with soapy water.
Cleaning and storage
Spring sowing is usually eaten in salads. Summer crops are sent for storage. Start cleaning at the end of September in dry weather. Dig with a pitchfork.
You can store the crop in the cellar or in the underground. Can be stored in open bags covered with sawdust in a cool, dark place. You can tie the bags, but make slots in them for air access. It is desirable that the humidity in the storage area be at least 80-85%
