Black currant Velor: photo of the variety
Black currant Velor is a medium-sized and not particularly sprawling bush with straight shoots, which are colored in a light shade of brown along the entire length, only in the upper part they are light green.
The dark green leaf plate is five-lobed, pubescent on the underside. Its front side is matte, leathery to the touch and covered with wrinkles. The central blade of the leaf plate is elongated and slightly bent; at the base of the leaf there is a rather deep notch.
Velor currant blooms with light pink flowers, shaped like bells. The length of the fruit cluster is on average about five centimeters.
Blackcurrant Velor is only a partially self-fertile variety, its self-fertility is 44%, therefore, in order to obtain the maximum possible yield, it is recommended to plant a suitable pollinator nearby. In this case, the best neighbors will be such currant varieties as "Selenga", "Zabaikalochka", "Primorsky Champion" or "Gorkhon».
Fruiting in the velor currant variety begins in the second or third year after planting the bush. The berries are quite large, weighing up to one and a half grams. The skin is thin, black, only near the stalk is brown, the flesh is light green. The taste of aromatic berries is sour-sweet, balanced. The tasters give it a very high rating - 4.8 points. The purpose of the berries is universal - they are good for fresh consumption and for any kind of processing.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
The characteristics of black currant Velor mainly consist of advantages, although there are some drawbacks here:
- If you did not have time to harvest the crop in time and it is overripe, then some of the berries may burst. It would seem a significant drawback? But it's enough to pick the berries in time, and you don't have to worry about it.
- The black currant variety Velor does not tolerate drought very well, weather conditions affect the quality of the crop. Also a serious drawback, especially if you come to the dacha only for the weekend and cannot water the plants regularly. In this case, you can set up a drip irrigation system and the problem will be solved.
The advantages of the velor currant variety include the following qualities:
- Regular high yields.
- High frost resistance.
- Excellent taste of berries, their universal purpose.
If we talk about the immunity of the velor currant variety, its resistance in the kidney mite and powdery mildew can be characterized as average, therefore this characteristic cannot be attributed to either the advantages or disadvantages. It is easier to prevent any problem than to eliminate its consequences later, so gardeners should take timely care of the preventive treatment of bushes with drugs that prevent the development of diseases (fungicides) and the appearance of harmful insects (insecticides).
