At the moment, black currant is considered one of the most common horticultural crops grown by gardeners in our country. At some point, it became so used that more and more new varieties appeared almost every day, and, of course, it is quite problematic to understand all this diversity. Therefore, in order to make it easier for you to decide when choosing a variety that you plant in your garden, we will consider the Druzhnaya black currant as a wonderful option. In this article, you will learn everything about her and be able to add your own opinion.
Breeding history
Blackcurrant Daughter Druzhnaya belongs to the group of medium-ripening currants, was obtained not at the University of Breeding Sciences, but at an ordinary breeding station, which, however, does not make it worse.
The maternal varieties were selected very carefully, and the team of breeders who worked on this project, although they do not differ in loud names known throughout the scientific community, nevertheless did an excellent job, thanks to which we were able to get a wonderful variety on the table.
By the way, the Druzhnaya currant is a fairly young culture, since it was entered into the state register only ten years ago. It is grown mainly in the East Siberian region, since currants are zoned there.
Blackcurrant Daughter Friendly - description and characteristics
The Druzhnaya Daughter currant bush does not have impressive dimensions. On the contrary, it is quite compact and convenient for growing in a small garden. The compactness also extends to its crown, which does not go beyond the medium size.
The shoots of the bush of this variety are not lignified at first, but still rather thick and covered with distinct pubescence. As they grow, they practically do not bend, and their color is anthracite.
As the shoots grow, they still become lignified, and their shade from anthracite turns into a pale brown. Also, the fluff on them practically disappears, and the entire surface is almost matte.
The bud on the shoots of the Doch Druzhnaya variety is of medium size, but a rather unusual oblong shape, which ends in strongly pointed ends. Their shade is light green, almost light green. There is almost no pubescence on them, and they also do not gather in groups - they grow one by one.
As for the leaves, in this variety, unlike all other vegetative parts, they are rather large and have a very rich green color. The surface of the leaf plates is matte, and also does not have pubescence.
The very shape of the plates is very strongly curved, and the blades, of which there are only five pieces, are very sharply pointed. The middle of them is much larger in size than the lateral ones, and also weak serration is observed on all of them.
Also, on the surface of the leaf plates of this variety, one can quite clearly observe convex veins that extend from the middle of the leaf, as well as from the middle of each individual blade at a right angle.
The petioles of the leaves of this variety are distinguished by their strength, and therefore even very windy weather is not able to pluck them, which, of course, is a plus. The shade of the petioles is dark green, and there is also a slight pubescence. Overall, they are matte and very pleasant to the touch.
The flowers of the Doch Druzhnaya variety are neither large in size nor unusual in color, but they can still decorate your garden a little during flowering, gathering in quite numerous inflorescences.
The shade of the petals ranges from dark pink to almost white, and the clusters on which all the inflorescences are collected do not have any distinctive features. They are highly branched, have long pubescent petioles, as well as medium parameters of thickness and strength.
However, the most juicy and interesting part of this variety is, of course, the berries. They are distinguished by their truly impressive size, although they cannot boast of leadership in this direction. The berries weigh from a gram to two, and their shape is an almost perfect ball.
The berries contain a very large number of small seeds, and their color is pitch black. However, due to the glossy skin, bluish-silvery reflections are constantly observed on the surface, which make the berry very attractive in appearance.
By the way, the skin is also not very thick, and therefore does not interfere with eating berries at all. There is no funnel for the stalk on the surface of the berry, but this does not make the fastening of the stalk to the berry worse: they rarely fall off ahead of time, but the separation remains dry and comfortable.
The most important parameter of these fruits, however, is not their size and not the strength of the peduncle, but the taste, and it is simply excellent for the Dachi Druzhnaya berries. We can say that it almost ideally balances between acidity and sweetness, which is highly appreciated by tasters, and therefore the tasting rating of these fruits is so high - as much as four and a half points.
In addition, the berries of this variety have another indisputable advantage: they have a completely universal purpose, and therefore they can be eaten raw with equal success, processed, made from them, and also sold - they are suitable for all this.
It is impossible, of course, to forget about the usefulness of currants in general, since it is one of the most saturated with all kinds of vitamins and minerals of crops.
Of course, she will not be able to cure any ARVI disease, but she can easily relieve symptoms, strengthen your immunity, and also speed up your recovery. Of course, products such as compotes or currant preserves have these properties to a lesser extent than raw berries, but there are still plenty of vitamins in them.
However, these are not all the characteristics of this variety, because it also has exceptional physiological properties, such as, for example, its particularly high winter hardiness, which was achieved by crossing two winter-hardy varieties.
Also, the variety resists drought quite well, although this parameter is not at its best, and it is also not at all afraid of hot weather.
Another useful property of the Daughter Druzhnaya currant is that it is as much as thirty-six percent self-fertile, and therefore, even if you do not want to plant a pollinator, you will get a pretty decent harvest. However, if you are going to grow a crop on an industrial scale, then you certainly need pollinators.
We must not forget about the exceptional immunity of this plant, which perfectly resists many dangerous diseases that annually take away more than one thousand tons of crops.
By the way, about the harvest: the Druzhnaya currant variety brings about eight tons of berries per hectare, or two kilograms per bush. However, if you fertilize the plants well, and also take good care of them, you can achieve great results.
Blackcurrant Druzhnaya Daughter: advantages and disadvantages
As you may have noticed, this culture has a huge number of advantages, due to which it has become especially popular in its region.Nevertheless, unfortunately, there are no ideal plants, and therefore this variety has its drawbacks. These include the non-simultaneous ripening of berries, due to which the harvest is sometimes stretched for whole weeks, as well as a certain non-uniformity of berries, which, however, is not always observed.
As you may have noticed, the variety has significantly fewer disadvantages than advantages, which include its amazing winter hardiness, as well as resistance to other types of external influences, wonderful transportability of berries, which allows them to be transported over long distances, and, of course, their wonderful a taste rated at four and a half points out of five.
