Blackcurrant August
Content:
Black currant Augusta was obtained in Novosibirsk by crossing the Bredthorpe and Prince varieties, as well as other dessert currant varieties.
Many professional breeders worked on the hybrid, and the plant became officially registered in 2006 with a recommendation for growing in the West Siberian region.
Black currant Augusta - description and characteristics
The shrub is of medium height and is characterized by lignified shoots. The bark has a dark gray hue, and the branches themselves are slightly curved. Currant leaves have a classic five-lobed shape and a pronounced dark green hue. The veins on the leaf have a distinct pattern, where there is an acute angle between the lateral and central yolks.
The leaves are attached with a medium-length petiole. The diameter of the petiole is large enough.
Fruit
The fruits are quite large, about 2-3 g each. Their shape is round. The rind is quite dense with a characteristic black sheen. The berries are fastened with a small stalk, which has a green tint.
The berries taste very sweet and aromatic. Experts estimate the taste of berries at 4.8 points. Each fruit contains a large amount of nutrients: dry substances, sugars, acids and vitamin C, as well as pectin.
This plant has good frost resistance, and also has a high immunity to common diseases such as powdery mildew, anthracnose. Rarely, a plant can be susceptible to wild ash, septoria, and a bud mite can attack it. The yield is assessed as average.
Conclusion
Black currant Augusta withstands winter frosts well, has rather large and tasty fruits. However, if the rules of care are not followed, the bush can be attacked by some insect pests, as well as affected by fungal diseases.
