Experienced gardeners, having received the August harvest of greens and vegetables, do not end there. When garlic, early potatoes, peas, onions, early cabbage and other crops are harvested, the planting sites are taken up again. The end of summer and autumn in many regions of Russia are quite sunny, and it is possible to use it effectively. To paraphrase a well-known proverb, it turns out that although August is the crown of summer, the harvest is not over yet! So what to plant in August?
What to plant in August?
August is mainly characterized by mild warmth, when the extreme heat recedes and the nights are cooler. Early ripening crops that require night coolness are what you need for an August planting. From various green vegetables - radish, daikon, early beets and carrots, radishes, salads, you can get a re-harvest!
First, they begin to plant herbs and spicy varieties of dill, watercress, basil, coriander and others. Properly created conditions allow seedlings to appear immediately and form dense greenery to the plant. Next, onions, peas and early types of beets and carrots are planted. It is worth noting that these vegetables will not be gigantic, but the great taste of early fruits will pleasantly surprise you.
If you plant forty-day potatoes in the first days of August, then in September you will get young potatoes. Add fresh dill and you're done!
Peking cabbage and black radish are sown on the 15th of August, as well as early ripening radishes and daikon, and in a couple of weeks you will harvest delicious fruits. Autumn - they are especially sweet without harsh aftertastes.
Try sowing these crops two to three times a month at intervals of about 8 days - fresh, tasty and healthy vegetables will always be in your kitchen.
The end of summer is the time for green fertilizers (siderates). With them, the soil will improve its structure: there will be sufficient nitrogen in it, and there will be no weeds.
Mustard, peas, phacelia can be used as siderates. Sow them at the end of summer, then you will be assured of a large yield for the next year (if you raise the greenery up to 15 cm, you can dig everything up).
What to plant in August: sowing features
Agrotechnical work on sowing the above vegetable crops repeat the spring planting.
Clean the beds from plant and other residues and spill well. Before watering, add nutritious and disinfecting soil solution "Baikal-EM1" (in a ratio of 1: 100, ie 100 ml. Solution per 10 liters. Water).
About preparing the soil for sowing
After the soil has matured, it is loosened up to 15 cm in depth, along the way - the weed is removed. Small grooves are cut on the beds. Now you need nitrophoska, it is brought in before watering (kemira with crystal, planriz, trichopolum, epin and other complex compounds are also suitable).
This soil preparation system is suitable for all cultivated plants that are planted at the end of summer. With its help, the soil will be fertilized with the activation of beneficial microflora that suppresses harmful fungi and bacteria, and the seeds will grow faster. In terms of timing, shoots appear with this soil preparation a couple of, or even four days earlier than usual, which is important for late planting.
About sowing and leaving
Before preparing the beds, they are engaged in the cultivation of seeds (wetting with a root solution or other stimulant).
Seeds are sown by sprinkling them with dry earth or sand. Next, mulching is used with peat, sawdust or crushed shavings. This process will prevent the formation of a soil crust after abundant watering, and the stored moisture will give rise to quick and friendly seedlings.
When the seedlings have 2 leaves each, they must be thinned out (just not onions, not peas, and not spicy-flavoring). Further, sufficient regular watering is required. Avoid dry soil and crust formation!
It is also important not to overexpose the greens and selectively cut them off when they grow 10-15 centimeters. For example, cut the onion for the first time at a height of 100 mm, and thus, in addition to fresh onions, you will get a lot of feathers.
Lettuce, when the planting thickens strongly, is thinned out (left between shoots up to 6 cm), and then the foliage will be thicker and more juicy.
When you find the bunch ripeness, it's time for the second thinning of the roots. If the soil was pre-fertilized before sowing, then fertilizing is not needed.
Preventive measures against various diseases, fleas and other harmful insects are carried out using biological products. Spraying with them is carried out according to the instructions, using biofungicides and bioinsecticides.
Fleas are pollinated with an ash solution of plants and soil.
