What to plant after early potatoes
Content:
There are still 2-3 months left until the end of the season, and during this time you can manage to grow another crop of vegetables or herbs. When choosing a crop for planting, you should pay attention to what is suitable for planting after potatoes and what is not. It is believed that crops such as oats, peas, mustard or rapeseed thrive after early potatoes. But not everyone needs them, so you should pay attention to some vegetables and herbs.
Early potatoes. What is not advised to plant after it
Experienced gardeners do not advise planting crops that have common diseases with them after potatoes. For example, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. But green salads of different varieties (iceberg, arugula) will grow quite quickly and are perfect for such a garden.
Before sowing the salad, a little rotted compost is introduced into the soil and the garden is dug up. It can also be fertilized with nitrogen and phosphorus or bone and fish meal. After watering the soil well, wait a while until it is absorbed, and then sow greens.
Early potatoes. What else can be dropped after it
Consider what else can be planted on the vacated bed:
Carrots and rutabagas... Fertilizing the soil before planting such root crops is not required, it will be enough to loosen and water it. Having sown the seeds, they are sprinkled on top with a layer of dry soil.
Beans... After loosening the soil, grooves are made in it 15 cm wide. Compost is placed on the bottom and covered with a 10 cm soil layer. After thorough watering, seeds are sown or seedlings are planted.
Cauliflower and broccoli... If you want to plant cauliflower or broccoli on the vacated area, then you only need to use seedlings. It will not be possible to get a harvest from seeds in such a period of time. First of all, the soil must be loosened and top dressing containing nitrogen and phosphorus must be applied. For this purpose, bone and fish meal is added.
Chard. The beet is harvested in 1.5-2 months. Before planting it, the soil must also be loosened and fertilized with bone and fish meal. The seeds are sown in well-moistened soil to a depth of 2 cm.
Fennel. This bulbous vegetable resembles dill with its tip. To plant it, you need to prepare a trench 15 cm deep, at the bottom of which compost is laid and sprinkled with bone meal. Having covered the hole with dry soil, the bed is loosened, watered and allowed to dry out for some time. Seeds are planted to a depth of about 1 cm.
Things to Remember
After growing potatoes, the soil is moistened, has high water and air permeability. But the time of planting a new culture falls on the hottest and driest period of time - mid-summer, and young plants may not survive under the scorching sun. Therefore, it is better to grow them through seedlings, planting it in the garden only after it gets stronger.
You can also use a covering material that protects the garden for 1-2 weeks. For example, spunbond will do. It reflects the rays of the sun and will not allow the soil to dry out.
