Blackcurrant Katerina was bred at the St. Petersburg Agrarian University (formerly the Leningrad Agricultural Institute). The author of this variety is E.I. Glebova, and the "parents" were the varieties "Black Lisovenko" and "Leningrad giant". In the mid-nineties of the last century, the Katerina currant variety was included in the State Register and recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth Region. This variety is common in the gardens of the Tambov, Voronezh, Belgorod, Kursk, Lipetsk and Omsk regions.

Blackcurrant Katerina is a medium-sized bushy shrub with straight, hairless shoots. Large bright green leaf plates are five-lobed, their surface is smooth and shiny, pubescence, as well as on the shoots, is absent. The central lobe of the leaf is pulled downward and slightly bends to the side; the teeth are sharp and rather long.
The flowers of the Katerina currant are medium in size, painted in a pale pink color. The fruit cluster is rather short, its length is on average six centimeters, the berries are loosely located on the cluster.
The currant bush Katerina begins to bear fruit in the second or third year after planting. The average weight of berries is one and a half grams, although large specimens weighing more than two grams may also come across. The surface of the berries is black, matte, the flesh is light green. The content of sugars in the composition of berries is 8.3%, their sweet and sour taste is rated by tasters at four points, while the tasters are already assessing jam by five points. The yield of black currant Katerina is on average two kilograms per bush (if we talk about an industrial scale, it is 6-7.5 tons per hectare). The purpose of the berries is universal - they are suitable both for fresh consumption and for making drinks, jams and preserves.
