Cherry Poppy
Content:
Sweet cherry poppy was created at the Scientific Research Institute of the Caucasus Region, dedicated to viticulture and horticulture. Thanks to the crossing of the Melitopol and French varieties, a new variety called Poppy appeared. The author of the Mac cherry variety is Elena Alekhina, who carried out the crossing and subsequent checks after creation.
Cherry poppy: variety description
The Poppy cherry tree grows up to 5 meters in height and is considered a large species. Sweet cherry grows rapidly and forms a wide and dense crown. The branches are very close to each other, so the tree needs frequent pruning to keep the tree comfortable and function well. The crown has the shape of an oval. The buds are located on branches and have a large oval shape. They deviate from the trunk by 60 degrees. The leaves are ovoid, about 13 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide. The top of the leaf is strongly pointed, and jaggedness is observed along the edges. The leaf plate is curved, one of the surfaces is matte and fluffy, the other is glossy and smooth; there are also veins in the leaf that do not stand out much, since they have a gray-green color. The leaf petioles are very large, so the leaves are firmly attached to the branch.
During the flowering period on the tree of the cherry variety Poppy, you can see the average number of flowers on the tree, they are collected in one inflorescence of 2-4 flowers. The petals in the flowers are densely spaced in relation to each other, therefore the flowers are small in size. The flower is round in shape and the petals rise slightly upward, forming a kind of boat.
Cherry poppy: characteristic of the variety
The berries of the Poppy cherry variety are quite large, about 6-7 grams by weight, sometimes you can find berries of 10 grams, but this result is achieved only in warm climates and proper tree care. The berry is round in shape with a slightly elongated bottom, medium-sized funnels. The berry is slightly depressed from above. In color, the fruits are burgundy with a pronounced brown tint at full maturity. The inside of the berry is juicy and fibrous. The berries are very dense to the touch. The berry is located on a medium-sized stalk, about 4 centimeters, it holds the berry relatively tightly, but at full maturity, the stalk weakens, and the berries fall off. The bone in the pulp is perfectly separated from it.
In appearance, the fruits of the cherry poppy are very beautiful, in perfect harmony with the aroma and taste. Tasters rate the taste of cherries as 9.1 points out of 10 points. Each fruit contains 20% micronutrients, 14% dry matter, 9% natural sugars, 11% vitamin C and 2% acids.
The fruits perfectly retain their appearance even after falling, they do not crack due to the density of the skin. Berries can be used everywhere, as they are considered universal in use.
Harvesting
Sweet cherry Poppy belongs to a late variety, therefore flowering and ripening is carried out quite late. The crop can be harvested in late July or early August, depending on how much heat is in the region where the tree is grown. The first crop appears 4 years after planting.
Without pollinating neighbors, the tree will yield minimal or none at all. This will happen due to the fact that the flowers will not be pollinated, and the tree itself is sterile. The pollinator can be any other cultivar that has the same flowering period as the Poppy.
Sweet cherry of the Mac variety brings a large harvest of 11 tons per hectare.
