Diseases of eggplant: how to cure
Content:
Say what you like, but eggplant, the most capricious and whimsical garden culture on the site. But many summer residents are not at all afraid of this, and from year to year they grow eggplants on their site and hone their gardening skills. This culture is very often more and not at all resistant to pests. Today I will tell you about eggplant disease and measures of prevention, treatment and fight against fungi and diseases.
Eggplant diseases: black leg
The causative agent of blackleg is usually a fungus. It appears on the root collar of the plant, looks like a black spot. If you start the development of this disease, all eggplants will die, as this infection spreads at lightning speed. As soon as the fungus infects the root system, the eggplant cannot be saved. A black leg can appear on seedlings as soon as the plants have emerged. The most favorable environment for its development is high humidity and warm climate.
In order to prevent the appearance of this fungus on his seedlings, the gardener needs to carry out prevention. Be sure to process the seeds with a solution of potassium permanganate before sowing. We follow the irrigation schedule very closely, we do not allow moisture stagnation. The soil should also be disinfected, I usually sprinkle the soil with lime. But if these measures were not effective and the black leg is in charge of your garden, then you should resort to more serious measures. Eggplants are processed with special solutions (I buy in a store). Immediately remove diseased plants and burn them. I loosen the soil around the plants well, let it dry. I cover the bed with wood ash from above.
Eggplant diseases: bacterial spotting
Black spot is quite insidious and can manifest itself in any soil. The appearance of this disease is caused by bacteria. It affects plants chalkyly and at the initial stage it is practically not noticeable. Signs: - black spots appeared on the leaves; - the stems are also affected by dark spots and have an oblong shape; - the fruits have black blotches, which increase in size and turn into ulcers. Plants infected with bacteria will eventually die if not treated promptly. If the plant nevertheless copes with the disease and begins to grow, it is not worth leaving it among healthy fellows, since its harvest will not be suitable. Black spot bacteria actively begin their development when there is very hot weather and high soil moisture. Bacteria very quickly penetrate fruits and leaves through mechanical damage. Control measures are simple, seed treatment with re-sowing, high-quality harvesting of plant material left over from the last season.
We treat phytotorosis
The most common eggplant disease is phyto-tuberculosis. It affects almost the entire plant as a whole. Phytophthora can be recognized by brown - rusty spots on leaves and fruits. High humidity leads to rot, drought leads to wilting. Late blight develops very quickly, especially in cold rainy weather. For treatment, I usually use a solution of copper sulfate. Processing is carried out in the evening in dry warm weather. It is not advisable to carry out processing in the morning, the drug will mix with dew and there will be no proper effect. Plants cannot be treated with chemistry, as this will immediately affect the quality of the crop. It is best to wage the struggle with folk methods. The most effective method is the processing of plants with garlic infusion. One glass of garlic is needed for three liters of water. We insist for a day.We breed one to one and spray the eggplant. After processing, sprinkle the beds with wood ash.
Fighting white rot
White rot immediately affects the roots and only then moves to the leaves and stems. This disease has a fungal nature. A white bloom is immediately visible on the affected plants. Gradually, the root system begins to rot, and the plant withers and dries up. Infected fruits become soft and watery, they are not suitable for food. White rot actively develops at low air temperatures, immediately after transplanting eggplants into the garden. The fungus is able to live in the soil for a long time. In order not to lower outbreaks of white rot, observe the watering regime. Sprinkle wood ash on the bed once a week and loosen the soil very well.
Eggplant diseases: an insidious mosaic
The most common and insidious viral disease of eggplant is mosaic. Mosaic can destroy up to 25% of the crop per season. It is very easy to determine that a plant is infected with a mosaic. Eggplant fruits cover yellow spots, and the leaves are light, whitish. If the disease affects only the root system, it is almost impossible to calculate it. The cause of the mosaic is sick and contaminated soil. To avoid mosaic outbreaks in the fall, the soil must be sown with green manure and well dug up. Plants need to be regularly inspected; diseased seedlings need to be removed and burned.
Stolbur prevention
When a disease such as stolbur appears on your site, the leaves of the eggplant will turn dark purple, the flowers begin to dry and fall off, the stems become brittle, lose their elasticity. In order to reduce the risk of the appearance of a pillar, we weed the beds well, special attention should be paid to the removal of bindweed. But the most important preventive measure is seed treatment before planting. Growing eggplants on your site, you may encounter various fungi and diseases, but observing prevention and precautions, you can easily fight them. And eggplants will thank you for taking care of a bountiful harvest.
