Golden privet - not too tall shrub, about 70 cm, refers to the oval-leaved type of privet. Why did golden privet get such a name? All thanks to the unusual shade of the leaves, the more sunlight falls on them, the clearer their golden shine becomes. It is because of this that the foliage of the privet growing in the southern regions differs from the northern ones.
The crown of golden privet is spreading, slightly rare. During its formation, it is better to prune the shrub to a height of 30 cm. The leaves (about 5 cm) are similar to lilac leaves, their shape is oval. Small, narrow, bell-shaped flowers are also collected in inflorescences, like in lilacs. Their light color has a yellow tint.
Since golden privet is not very high in height, it can be planted as container plants. You can also plant it as a single shrub directly into the ground. The common privet also has a golden variety. But already the height of this bush can be about 3 m. Its leaves are yellow, with the onset of autumn they acquire a rich orange hue. In care, it does not have any special differences, an amendment is made only to a greater height.
Golden privet blooms in late spring. She blooms, of course, not as gorgeous as lilacs. But its greenery is much brighter, and you can make any shape of the bush. And even after the color wilts, bunches of berry appear on the peduncles. They cannot be eaten, but they can be used as bird food. This plant, with proper care and attention, can live on the site for 70 years.
Golden privet: how to plant it

First you need to choose a suitable site so that the variety is truly frost-resistant, as breeders say. It shouldn't be open because privet does not like drafts and strong winds, especially in winter. It is also not recommended to plant privet in the shade of trees, otherwise it will not be able to receive nutrients. Only a slightly shaded place is possible. The most optimal soil composition is as follows: 4 parts of turf, 2 humus, 1 sand, 1 leaf land.
Next, dig a hole 50 cm deep and 35-40 cm wide (if it is a single bush) or a trench with the same dimensions (if you are creating a decorative border). Create a drainage of about 10 cm from the stones. Pour a mixture of mineral fertilizers, ash and lime on top of this (ratio 3: 1). Then plant the fathoms itself in the middle and compact with soil. And lastly, be sure to pour plenty of water.

Watering for golden privet is very necessary. It should be sufficient, but do not overmoisten, otherwise the roots may rot. But the lack of water is also harmful. This is fraught with wilting of greenery. Loose the soil after every watering.
In the middle zone of our country, watering golden privet is important only at the very beginning of the growing season. At other times, natural precipitation will be enough for her. But during a hot dry period, you will have to remember about a watering can. Frequent fertilization of privet is not required. It is good to add dry compost every spring by placing it under each bush or granular superphosphate. Also, every two to three years in the autumn period, you can add nitrogen or phosphorus (10-15 g per square meter). To reduce acidity, dolomite flour, chalk or lime can be added for digging. It is better to do this at the end of autumn.
Also, in the fall, you need to trim the golden privet. In young bushes, remove about 1: 3 of it from the trunk; in adults, less.
Golden privet: reviews of the variety

According to gardeners, all the qualities of golden privet meet the declared breeders. The decorative properties of this plant add beauty and originality to the site. Low bushes, planted as curbs, look beautiful. As a bonsai culture, single bushes are grown indoors. It is easier and more convenient to propagate this type of plant by cuttings. Immediately in the open ground privet is planted in the month of June. It is best to do this in the shade and cover with a plastic bottle with small holes to create a greenhouse effect. The rooting of the cuttings takes half a month, after 2 months the bottle can be removed. And already next spring, you can transplant the seedling to a permanent place.
Also, gardeners recommend making mandatory pruning in the autumn. Then the golden privet will be able to survive the winter well. And in regions where thaws are replaced by severe frosts, the bushes should be covered.
