So the hot summer has come. Garden work is in full swing now. Summer residents are engaged in endless weeding, watering. As well as feeding and hilling plants. The first harvest is still far away. But August is also just around the corner and there are many works to be done in the garden.
To meet this period with dignity, you need to know in advance about the work that awaits you in the garden at the end of summer. It is during this period that the active preparation of trees for wintering and dormancy will begin. And how you prepare your garden depends on its future.
Pruning and pest control
August in the garden is a time when a lot of pests appear. This is, first of all, due to the fact that a lot of volunteers appear in the gardens, part of the harvest does not ripen. Therefore, in order not to dilute the dirt, you must definitely remove it all.
The fact is that it is considered a favorable breeding ground for various bacteria and pests. And in order to make this carrion smaller, summer residents install supports under the most overloaded branches.
During this period, many other garden pests appear, for example, aphids. Also in August, medical, preventive pruning of fruit trees and shrubs begins. Moreover, during this period, the fight against root shoots continues. At the end of summer, it is also necessary to prune two-year-old raspberry shoots.
August in the garden: watering and feeding
It's no secret that August is considered one of the hottest months of summer. Therefore, despite the fact that the fruiting period of many horticultural crops has already ended, the plants in the garden need watering. It must be produced taking into account the characteristics of different species and varieties of plants.
It is especially important to water all trees and shrubs. The fact is that from a lack of moisture, many fruit crops begin to lose leaves, prematurely feeling the arrival of autumn. And if during this period your fruit crops are not prepared for the dormant period, then they will tolerate wintering very poorly.
Harvest any remaining crops in the garden. In August, summer cottages are filled with apples and pears. If you do not plan to process these fruits right away, but want to keep them until winter, then you need to pick the ripe fruits directly from the branch and put them in boxes. Containers are sprinkled with sawdust or newspaper scraps. This must be done so that the fruits do not come into contact with each other. And more specifically - the lower layers with the upper ones.
Stack the fruit loosely and never drop it. Since they will start to rot very quickly. And over time, this rot will spread to neighboring fruits. If you do everything right, then even at the end of next spring you will delight yourself with fresh apples and pears.
During this period, it is also necessary to feed the fruit crops. This is necessary in order to prepare the garden for winter. However, do not use nitrogen fertilizers. As it can stimulate the growth of new shoots and foliage. And in the fall, plants do not need this at all.
Also, nitrogen fertilizers weaken the plants very much. Therefore, it is better not to send them for wintering in this state. You can feed the shrubs in the garden and wood ash by digging up the soil near the plant with this mixture. Be sure to loosen the soil after top dressing so that the fertilizer is not carried away with the rainwater.
We plant in August
In August, many planting works are also carried out. After the strawberries bear fruit in July, they actively form new whiskers. And this means that it is time to expand the area of the berries.
A rosette mustache is considered an excellent planting material. Therefore, after they grow up, they are separated from the mother tuber. And they are transferred to a new site. It is advisable to plant strawberries in rows so that it is easier for you to get to the mustache. Also, before planting strawberries in the ground, it is recommended to add humus or manure. And also add sand or peat.
Do not bury the sockets with a strong force. Since the strawberry itself introduces roots into the soil to the desired depth. It is also necessary to carry out the corresponding work on the old berry. Remove the dead strawberry leaves and water the berry. And also thin it a little so that over time the berry does not shrink from lack of nutrition, but remains as large.
Also in August, summer residents should take care of future planting holes for young seedlings. To do this, firstly, you need to choose a place suitable for a particular culture. Consider the following factors: moisture, light, soil type. Pay special attention to nearby plants. Since they can create shade for young seedlings.
Apple trees and pears are planted at a distance of at least five meters from each other. Shrubs at a distance of up to 2 meters. With this in mind, dig the planting holes. Put manure or humus there. And cover with plastic until spring. This method of preparing the soil for planting seedlings of trees and shrubs will help you increase the nutritional value of the soil. This means the survival rate of seedlings.
So August is not only a month of rest and harvesting, it is also the period when many garden works begin!
